Keira Knightley is swapping Hollywood for Broadway next year with her first role on the New York stage.

The 29-year-old actress is taking the lead in the British playwright Helen Edmundson's adaptation of Emile Zola's classic novel Thérèse Raquin, playing the title role.

Published in 1867, the tragic tale tells the story of an unhappily married Frenchwoman who conspires with her lover to kill her husband, with disastrous results.

Knightley was previously nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2009's West End production The Misanthrope.
