Update, 10/24: A private funeral for Oscar de la Renta will be held at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City on Monday, November 3rd, WWD reports. Last night, Peter Copping, de la Renta's successor, spoke at Fashion Group International's Night of Stars about the late designer, The Cut reports: "Oscar has left me with his fantastic legacy, and it's something that I'm very much looking forward to taking forward. And being here amongst so many friends, I know that I'll see a lot of support, and I'm sure that Oscar will be my guardian angel."

Original post, 10/20: Oscar de la Renta passed away this evening at the age of 82 after being diagnosed with cancer in 2006. The ebullient designer was born in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic in 1932 and studied painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He went on to work in the ateliers of Cristóbal Balenciaga, Lanvin and Balmain before launching his eponymous New York-based line in 1965, outfitting the Upper East swans, First Ladies from Jacqueline Kennedy to Michelle Obama, celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, and delighting the world with his ultra-feminine aesthetic for decades. De la Renta most recently designed the wedding gown of Amal Clooney. In a recent talk at the 92Y, the designer told the audience, "Age is in your mind. My passion, my spirit, my joy for life remains."

Glenda Bailey, editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar remembers the designer, "Fashion, at its best, is about grace. In this way, Oscar de la Renta was fashion. Like his clothes, he was magical. How he will be missed."

Oscar's son-in-law, Alex Bolen, CEO of Oscar de la Renta, and stepdaughter, Eliza Bolen, Vice President of Licensing, took to the designer's website to share a heartfelt, handwritten note to confirm the passing of the beloved designer. To honor the late Oscar de la Renta, his family and friends plan to continue his legacy through his fashion label in hopes of making Oscar, "very proud".
